I’m Fine.

“The limit of your self-abuse is the limit you will tolerate from other people. If someone abuses you more than you abuse yourself, you walk away, you run, you escape. But if someone abuses you a little less than you abuse yourself, perhaps you stay longer. You still deserve that abuse.” Don Miguel Ruiz
What do you hear
when I say “I’m fine”?
Do you hear the pain
that’s lurking behind
the simple dismissal,
a door firmly closed.
Please don’t ask more,
for fear I’ll disclose
my inadequate failing,
to put words to feelings,
Revealing my self
as fundamentally lacking.
Seeking a right reply,
to genuine interest
in my emotional well-being.
One that doesn’t digress
too much, or too lengthy,
or hinting at trauma,
or sharing inappropriately
- not here for the drama.
One that doesn’t invite
unanswerable questions.
No trust in compliments,
simply diverting attention.
“I’m fine, and you?”
- a simple response
that easily conveys
a felt resonance.
Said with a smile
to reassure others,
that lights up the eyes
a genuine gladness
that they cared to ask,
to gently impose.
Everything’s fine.
